In addition to the well-known “three highs” (referring to hypertension, hyperlipidemia, and hyperglycemia), osteoporosis is another common chronic disease. If not properly managed, it can lead to complications, disability, or even death, with fractures being the most common complication of osteoporosis. After the age of 40, bone density gradually decreases with age, making the bones more fragile.

330,00 Cases
Between 2005 and 2018, there were a total of over 330,000 hospital admissions in Hong Kong due to falls.
Osteoporosis is defined as a systemic skeletal disorder characterized by low bone mass and deterioration of bone microarchitecture, resulting in increased bone fragility and susceptibility to fractures. The risk of developing osteoporosis increases with age, particularly among women, especially after menopause.
The Osteoporosis Society of Hong Kong (OSHK) was established in 2002 with Professor Annie Kung as the Founding President. The Society comprises physicians, allied health professionals, scientists, and students interested in osteoporosis and related subjects. The Society holds an annual meeting, “Regional Osteoporosis Conference” (ROC), to offer a platform to discuss various osteoporosis-related issues, from the latest scientific advances, clinical management, to advocacy.
OSHK is also a founding member of the Asian Federation of Osteoporosis Societies (AFOS), which comprises osteoporosis societies from 14 regions and countries in Asia.
The society promotes scientific research related to osteoporosis and encourages scholars and scientists to exchange knowledge and collaborate in the field, aiming to advance the treatment and prevention of osteoporosis. Additionally, the society organizes an annual Regional Osteoporosis Conference (ROC), providing a platform for discussions on various osteoporosis-related topics, ranging from the latest scientific advancements to clinical management and advocacy.
OSHK provides information on the latest conference proceedings, academic research, guidelines, and professional opinions regarding osteoporosis. These resources can help doctors, researchers, and other professionals stay updated on developments in the field.
The organization hosts events for patients and caregivers, offering information, support, and guidance from healthcare professionals. These events address their specific needs, provide education, and facilitate connections with others facing similar challenges.
Osteoporosis is a condition that can be diagnosed, prevented, and treated. The journey to prevent osteoporosis can be divided into four steps: assessment, diagnosis, treatment, and management. Understanding osteoporosis and its related risk factors early on is essential for maintaining bone health and reducing the risk of osteoporosis.
