
Understand Osteoporosis
Osteoporosis is a silent killer. It is a bone disease that develops when bone mineral density and bone mass decreases, or when the structure and strength of bone changes. This can lead to a decrease in bone strength that can increase the risk of fractures.
What is Osteoporosis?
Osteoporosis is defined as a systemic skeletal disorder characterized by low bone mass and deterioration of bone microarchitecture, resulting in increased bone fragility and susceptibility to fractures. The risk of developing osteoporosis increases with age, particularly among women, especially after menopause.
Pathophysiology of Osteoporosis

New bone gradually replaces old bone.
A robust skeleton requires the contribution of various cell types to support and protect the body. The human body continuously rebuilds new bone to replace old bone. In the case of osteoporosis, the rate of bone breakdown exceeds the rate of bone formation, resulting in weakened bones.

Excessive bone removal leads to bone loss.
Age-related bone loss occurs when the balance between bone removal and replacement is disrupted. Factors such as menopause, aging, and hormone deficiencies can contribute to remodeling and an increased risk of fractures.

Bone loss increases the risk of fractures.
Bone loss weakens the structure of the bones, leading to an elevated risk of fractures, particularly when combined with age-related functional decline and other risk factors.

Gradual loss of bone density compromises bone strength and resilience, resulting in weakened bones that are highly vulnerable to fractures
Bones are living tissues that undergo continuous remodelling, involving the breakdown of old bone tissue (resorption) and the formation of new bone tissue (formation). This balanced process ensures the strength, structure, and density of our bones. However, in individuals with osteoporosis, this balance is disrupted, leading to excessive bone resorption and inadequate bone formation. As a result, bone density gradually declines, compromising bone strength and increasing the risk of fractures. Minor impacts or falls can easily lead to fractures. After a fracture, the risk of another fracture increases by up to 10 times. Early prevention can help slow the rate of bone loss and reduce the risk of fractures.
